Project management is well known to be where the rubber meets the road to the development of the performance of teams, departments, programmes and projects.  It is for this reason that people from a range of fields and professions utilise project management.  Projects are reliant on the intelligent application of resources to deliver a product or service in a specified time and cost.  A successful project is one that achieves the goals and outcomes defined and it is these outcomes that Guide the activities and functions of the project. To manage a project successfully there are four key components: Objective, Scope, Time and Cost.  There are additional areas which define project success, but these will be covered in part two.

Objectiveappealed to the stakeholders and indeed the project sponsors and states what the project is going to achieve.  Typically it will define what the outcomes will be, why it is needed and how it will be achieved, but any good project will also define what scope the project controls, covers and that is left to the project or the Project Sponsor to oversee.  When units of time can be applied, it is worth ensuring they are understood and include a deadline or target date for attainment.  There may be assumptions in the objective, and it is important to describe them, as well as explaining to the sponsors and client what can reasonably be regarded as assurance of success.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective PRINCE2 Managers

When I began accounting in ISO 9000 certification I was a member of the IRS and it was a requirement that I send in a photocopy of my IRS W-9, in order to qualify for certification, followed by a 2 x 5 index card with my business Tax ID number on it for the IRS to verify that it was accurate. Since I have not yet earned my Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification, I was required to complete the Graduate Certified Professional Resume, just to prove that I had some experience different from the CRP required by the IRS.  I did have that, however I never submitted my resume and a whole lot of my schooling is in the pipe work of accounting.

I only studied sales and marketing (excel and san league automation) and not project management.  Until I read that book “Project Management” by Steven R. Covey, I believed that only large corporations would need to manage a project.  Now knowing how much I have yet to make about $100,000 with time and expense savings, in addition to adding it to my resume, I think I might start reading some books on project management.

The biggest change started a year ago when I decided to start making money from my wonderful website by using snippets of articles from other writers.  This includes the must-read “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey.  Since this is project management “how to’s” I like them (and the ideas of Covey) a lot.  If you too want to start an online business then do some research on the subject and see if you can find a good course out there.  If you are already in business I highly recommend that you read “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” as some of the subjects are the same.

I only started recently picking up the terminology for project management, as I am not a project management player when it comes to working with individuals.  All my projects from scratch or with other people fall into the project category instead of individual employee project.  For me to no longer be stretched for time, I feel Relief to be able to drop a project into the “career category.”  The money in doing so, as anyone can tell you, is even more attractive; pay up front, work till the end of the project or it’s over, good luck with that!…

 What is the difference between a project plan and a project?  Think about it for a second.  Do you need a plan to finish a project?  No, but you’ll find hundreds of articles saying that you do.  Why you ask?  The business world at its core is extremely short-selling and therefore, you’ll need guidelines for how to ‘not screw it up’ when the work really starts at the beginning.
